Hi Janice,
Once the squirrels find something to chew on, they will keep coming back. We always recommend hanging any bird feeder on a pole with a squirrel baffle, so the squirrels have a hard time climbing the pole to get to the feeder and/or hanging it away from anything like trees or buildings that the squirrels can jump from to land on your feeder.
