The scallops give them space when it’s raining to fly between the water runoff. Helps them to stay dry while feeding. I made an error when I ordered and they gave me the discount after the fact. “I am still up in the air about this protective cove for hanging bird feeders. The color is nice and bright. It somewhat protects the feeder as long as there is no wind, but when its raining and or snowing there is usually wind. It then blows and flops around startling the birds away. I am waiting til the hummingbirds arrive next month to try it over their feeder in hopes the appearance of more red attracts more hummingbirds.”
