Gas heaters can no longer be turned off by the control unit on the heater. If it was turned off in this way, and the gas valve developed a fault, then gas would seep into the room.
All new heaters are designed to be turned down to their minimum setting and turned off by closing the gas supply at the regulator. This is not a fault; it is a safety feature.
