I already own an SLR Magic 82mm Variable ND Filter which I use with my anamorphic rig so when I received my new GH5 I immediately ordered the 62mm version from Eastwood Sound and Vision to fit my Lumix lenses. I've always fitted ND filters to my lenses with all the video cameras I've owned; it's an important element to control exposure and keep the correct shutter speed to maintain the 180 degree rule while being able to shoot with the lens wide open or to set the lens aperture of your choosing. Buying several single ND filters to cover all your shooting conditions can be expensive so a variable ND filter makes good sense. I have tried various makes of variable ND filters in the past but for my type of shooting, none of them have come anywhere near the quality of the SLR Magic ones. For starters, it has a filter thread on the end to take a lens cap, which they supply, or another filter. It has hard stops with marked degrees of strength between and a locking ring so you can set the polarising effect to reduce reflections. Some variable ND filters produce unwanted colour casts to the footage and some can produce a nasty cross effect when adjusted to their darkest setting.....SLR Magic Variable ND Filter doesn't in respect of both these areas, and I have looked very closely. In all, this is a great variable ND filter, the build and glass quality is first class, I wouldn't dream off shooting without it on the end of my lens.
