As a language arts teacher and mother of two, I highly recommend Ello. Whether you have a struggling reader or the best reader in the class, this program is beneficial. It builds confidence, stamina, and strong vocabulary skills. Best of all, it’s so fun! At first, I had to sit with my child and read the books, but now he is choosing to pick up the books and the app and finishing them completely on his own! He is learning new vocabulary and reading great books every day.

My son is below his reading level and Ella helps my son with the words that he is stuck on. Before he reads each book it shows some of the key words that will be in the reading.

This is the first reading app that I actually wanted my child to try. We have tried other reading programs before but they seemed overwhelming and doesn’t encourage my child to read. I have a second grader that struggles to read, and so far she is very happy with Ello. She would ask to read with Ello several times a day. I like that the AI is able to hear my child read and would provide help if needed. The books we received were good and interesting, some I’ve heard of and some I’ve never heard of but still very good. There is also a reward program where my child can actually pick a prize which would arrive in the next months box of Ello.

My daughter has always been a bit behind in reading, but after getting Covid she suddenly lost all her site words putting her even further behind. While her teacher and I have been working hard to help her regain her skill and confidence, it’s been a struggle. After seeing an ad for Ello I was excited to give it a try. We’ve had it for a week and I am already SO impressed. My daughter is excited to read again and the app does such a great job of helping her out where she’s having difficulties. The customer service has also been top notch. I wrote my phone number down incorrectly not once, but twice! Since the app uses your number to get things started this was an obvious issue. Both times customer service was quick to respond and help me get it corrected. There is one glitch we’ve experienced where the bonus videos are so quiet we can’t hear them. When I reported the issue I was contacted right away to further investigate the issue. It hasn’t been resolved yet, but based on the response I have no doubt a solution will be found soon! In the mean time I just copy the link and pop it into my browser so my daughter can still watch them on YouTube.

My kiddo is excited to read and choose a book, and I love that I can watch her grow. I did need to work with support to find a better level to match her reading, but they were very responsive and replied quickly. My child is in speech therapy and it helps her with better pronunciation when needed. I would recommend it, I would love to see the option of having more books as well or books available on the app to help encourage reading till the next shipment.

Love the books but the app is sometimes hard to use some time the book skips pages or picks up our voices. Wish it was easier to use.

Thank you for the feedback, Nikole! A few tips for speech recognition in case it helps: Speech recognition (as you might know from Alexa or Siri) isn't perfect. We walk a delicate balance between not wanting to be SO strict that a slight accent or difference in pronunciation results in Ello getting stuck or detecting an error, and also not wanting to be so lenient that it lets kids through with a ton of mistakes or doesn't correct a mistake. Kids are particularly sensitive to the first --no one likes to be told they are "wrong" when they aren't-- so we lean a bit more lenient. Ello is always there for kids (via the question mark) when they want help, and we never interrupt them during reading to correct an error. Teachers don't do this either. We wait until the end of the page and then have them go back if we think they missed a word. The bottom line is this: we think about the experience holistically. Ello is motivating support that will correct them on errors (although not all errors, by design), is always there to help if a child proactively asks for it, and motivates them to keep going! A few tips for speech recognition in case it helps: Ello can get stuck (though we don't get reports of it happening too often). Here are some things that might help or explain: any damage to the microphone internally, background noise, or clarity of the speaker (yelling actually makes it worse!). Here are some things you can do: 1). Skip the page if it is read (push the arrow forward) 2). Hit the question mark to see where Ello is stuck 3). Keep reading fluidly at least 5 or 6 words. Reading one word at a time can actually make it worse. When getting help on a single word (when Ello has the flashlight up), give a few seconds before repeating it again. Ello can sometimes take a second to process single words. Let me know if any of this helps! We would love to learn more about the page skipping (we haven't seen that in our testing).
