From the first impression, I liked the idea very much, because my children are in the foundation stage of reading, and they interacted well with it.

Very independent & don’t like much help also don’t have anyone to judge if he’s mess it up .

We were excited to start Ello. The first box came and it was above my daughters reading level. We tried and then contacted support. They sent a new box of books at a lower level and we returned the others. The new box took forever to receive. We now have to start paying per month and have hardly had a chance to use it. While using it, my daughter will say a word wrong or not even say it at all and it will move to the next word as if she said it correctly. We are not satisfied with the program right now.

Hi Kelly, I am so sorry that you had a difficult first experience with the product. I see that our customer support team refunded the cost of your trial month, and we have credited your account $25. A few tips for speech recognition in case it helps: Speech recognition (as you might know from Alexa or Siri) isn't perfect. We walk a delicate balance between not wanting to be SO strict that a slight accent or difference in pronunciation results in Ello getting stuck or detecting an error, and also not wanting to be so lenient that it lets kids through with a ton of mistakes or doesn't correct a mistake. Kids are particularly sensitive to the first --no one likes to be told they are "wrong" when they aren't-- so we lean a bit more lenient. Ello is always there for kids (via the question mark) when they want help, and we never interrupt them during reading to correct an error. Teachers don't do this either. We wait until the end of the page and then have them go back if we think they missed a word. The bottom line is this: we think about the experience holistically. Ello is motivating support that will correct them on errors (although not all errors, by design), is always there to help if a child proactively asks for it, and motivates them to keep going! A few tips for speech recognition in case it helps: Ello can get stuck (though we don't get reports of it happening too often). Here are some things that might help or explain: any damage to the microphone internally, background noise, or clarity of the speaker (yelling actually makes it worse!). Here are some things you can do: 1). Skip the page if it is read (push the arrow forward) 2). Hit the question mark to see where Ello is stuck 3). Keep reading fluidly at least 5 or 6 words. Reading one word at a time can actually make it worse. When getting help on a single word (when Ello has the flashlight up), give a few seconds before repeating it again. Ello can sometimes take a second to process single words. Let me know if any of this helps! If you continue to experience trouble with the speech recognition, we will gladly refund you!

So far Ello has been really good in getting my son to read more. Ello definitely has made it more fun for him to sit down and read. The books we received have been really engaging and have kept him interested in continuing his reading. It’s only been a couple of weeks since we starting using Ello but I and my son have really enjoyed reading. My only complaint is that sometimes as Ello is showing how to pronounce words it will close out and continue without my son actually saying anything. And sometimes the book closes on its own. Minor issues but there is a huge upside since my son has always given me a hard time reading with just a book on its own. Will continue to keep using Ello until he másters reading.

Hoping this will be a great way to ensure my kids still read through the summer when things get busy! So far my 8YO is liking it; we may have to adjust the books a bit but we are still figuring it all out! App works great.

We’ve only just received our first box and my son has read 3 book. He likes the all which is HUGE. Typically he does not like any learning apps. It is very clear with the directions and some without tons of sounds and distractions. He is really looking forward to earning his prize! My issue is that the app will think he has read certain words when he hasn’t. Sometimes he reads them incorrectly and it continues, but it also thinks he has read an entire sentience we he hasn’t so it will go to the next page when he isn’t ready. So that’s a bit frustrating and definitely requires me to do this with him. I was hoping he would be able to be independent. Because he has anxiety around reading he uses this to his advantage and would skip right through the pages if I wasn’t there to correct him and go back to the correct page or word. We will still keep trying tho, because I do think he likes to do use it and I like that he can click on the word to listen to it as needed. He’s flying through tho, so I’m Not sure if the cost per month is worth it for only 5 books. Would also be nice if there was a button to go back to the last page he has read after he has earned his stars. When he earns his stars after two pages, you have to go forward to the next page before you get another back arrow. So you have to go forward to then go back essentially.

My daughter has always been reluctant to read since she started reading. She isn't the best reader and is a little self-conscious. Since starting Ello she is excited to read and learns better using the app. We have used other reading programs and I have not seen as much progress as I have with Ello. She is always excited to read more to earn prizes and awaits her package.
