We just completed our first month with Ello. My son enjoys reading along the interactive app, however- he sometimes has to shout the words multiple times to get it to register what he's reading. Could use some tips to ensure he does not get frustrated and miss out on the purpose/ reading.

Hi Andrew! Thank you for this feedback. A few tips for speech recognition in case it helps: Speech recognition (as you might know from Alexa or Siri) isn't perfect. We walk a delicate balance between not wanting to be SO strict that a slight accent or difference in pronunciation results in Ello getting stuck or detecting an error, and also not wanting to be so lenient that it lets kids through with a ton of mistakes or doesn't correct a mistake. Kids are particularly sensitive to the first --no one likes to be told they are "wrong" when they aren't-- so we lean a bit more lenient. Ello is always there for kids (via the question mark) when they want help, and we never interrupt them during reading to correct an error. Teachers don't do this either. We wait until the end of the page and then have them go back if we think they missed a word. The bottom line is this: we think about the experience holistically. Ello is motivating support that will correct them on errors (although not all errors, by design), is always there to help if a child proactively asks for it, and motivates them to keep going! A few tips for speech recognition in case it helps: Ello can get stuck (though we don't get reports of it happening too often). Here are some things that might help or explain: any damage to the microphone internally, background noise, or clarity of the speaker (yelling actually makes it worse!). Here are some things you can do: 1). Skip the page if it is read (push the arrow forward) 2). Hit the question mark to see where Ello is stuck 3). Keep reading fluidly at least 5 or 6 words. Reading one word at a time can actually make it worse. When getting help on a single word (when Ello has the flashlight up), give a few seconds before repeating it again. Ello can sometimes take a second to process single words. Let me know if any of this helps!

My daughter and I are absolutely head over heels for this company! She carries her Ello box around the house and loves reading to Ello. Not only that but getting points for her hard work gives her so much confidence and feeling of accomplishment. I’ve never seen her this interested in reading as she is reading a grade level behind and the thought of practicing reading made her frustrated. Thank you Ello for this wonderful experience that you have given to my daughter and the many more in the future!

So my daughter would struggle with her reading. I would notice how upset she would get when she tried to read. I even tried a private tutor and I would do daily reading on one on one but still it was very hard for her to read. When I saw the add on Ello I decided to give it a try and the results we’re incredible. As crazy at is sounds but in one day she read her first book. She struggled a lil but Ello would help with corrections and sounds and the results are incredible. Now I see how much she is enjoying her reading and Ello and the app..

Ello is very encouraging and helpful, the sticker chart towards the reward was great touch because she knows that soon she will reach book number 5 and she’s excited about that , so far I am happy with this subscription with all the helpful daily tips they send out and also when I couldn’t get into my account someone was able to help me out immediately, My daughter is pushing through these books and I am grateful that it’s helping her. soon she will be able to read fluently and I believe ello is a great touch for that , Her personal reading Buddy , I can trust that she’s ok reading while making dinner and that has been a great perk! Any word that she’s stuck on she presses the button and ello sounds out the letters and helps her go through the pages , normally she would get a little frustrated but now she has a little more confidence.

We’ve only had our first box for a few days, but my son is loving it! He wants to read “to the elephant” first thing in the morning, right after we get home from school…he’s never ASKED to read before. He is loving the idea of getting his prize in the mail next month. I’m sure that’s a big part of the motivation. The books we received are a nice variety of categories and seem appropriate for his reading level. We will definitely continue Ello through summer vacation and maybe beyond.

The program has been great thus far. It is great that it listens to my daughter and helps her with the words she needs help with. Sometimes it doesn't follow along correctly but that might be our issue having a twin sister next to her talking to much.

I only have good things to say about Read with Ello, my 6 years old daughter would never want to read, from the moment Ello arrived she was so excited and so happy that it has only been a few days and she's already getting back from school and independently she opens the app and books and starts reading, YEEESS!!! She's reading, it is very emotional to see my girl reading after trying many tutors, apps, books, and games!! Ello you are my daughter's best buddy!! Thank you Ello team also for being there for any questions we have. I recommend READ WITH ELLO!!
