I’ll be honest, I was very desperate when I gave Ello a try. I made my order and received it in the mail after only a few days. My son who would refuse to try reading with me, or even picking up a book at home has been flying through books and even told me he loves the help he gets from the Ello App! He is now reading better and more confidently before. We will continue to subscribe to Ello! Thank you Ello for helping my son read!

My daughter can read but needs help with her reading confidence and this app/set up is exactly what she needed. She is loving reading all the books so far and is excited about it.

My son was hooked the moment his box arrived. He sat down and did all 5 books in one session because he was so motivated. My older daughter asked for Ella books for her level as well!!! Wonderful product!!!

We’re a few days into read with Ello. My daughter is a reluctant reader, but she is excited to try this program and is asking to read. She likes earning a video at the end of each book, and the videos are fun and educational. The app does have some trouble understanding what she says sometimes. It either doesn’t register that she’s reading each word or it skips ahead to the next page before she’s read it out loud. So, it can be a little frustrating as she has to go back a page or repeat a page several times. Overall though we are impressed with the program and she’s looking forward to reading more.

Hi Tom, Thank you for the review. I am sorry that Ello did not fully meet your expectations. A few things that might be helpful: we are trying to work with the team at Amazon to allow our app on kids' profiles; unfortunately, this is a blocker on their side, not ours. They do not allow any apps with speech recognition on kids' profiles. We hope to have their cooperation to make this change in the future. Our speech recognition is best for children on the market, but it is still in production and improving. A few tips for speech recognition in case it helps: Speech recognition (as you might know from Alexa or Siri) isn't perfect. We walk a delicate balance between not wanting to be SO strict that a slight accent or difference in pronunciation results in Ello getting stuck or detecting an error, and also not wanting to be so lenient that it lets kids through with a ton of mistakes or doesn't correct a mistake. Kids are particularly sensitive to the first --no one likes to be told they are "wrong" when they aren't-- so we lean a bit more lenient. Ello is always there for kids (via the question mark) when they want help, and we never interrupt them during reading to correct an error. Teachers don't do this either. We wait until the end of the page and then have them go back if we think they missed a word. The bottom line is this: we think about the experience holistically. Ello is motivating support that will correct them on errors (although not all errors, by design), is always there to help if a child proactively asks for it, and motivates them to keep going! A few tips for speech recognition in case it helps: Ello can get stuck (though we don't get reports of it happening too often). Here are some things that might help or explain: any damage to the microphone internally, background noise, or clarity of the speaker (yelling actually makes it worse!). Here are some things you can do: 1). Skip the page if it is read (push the arrow forward) 2). Hit the question mark to see where Ello is stuck 3). Keep reading fluidly at least 5 or 6 words. Reading one word at a time can actually make it worse. When getting help on a single word (when Ello has the flashlight up), give a few seconds before repeating it again. Ello can sometimes take a second to process single words. Let me know if any of this helps! If you are still having issues with speech recognition, let us know and we can troubleshoot some more!
