“My daughter loves reading with me every night however she received her first Ello box last night and is so enthusiastic about reading by herself. She wanted to read all night and woke up at 6 this morning asking to read some more. She gets distracted, discouraged and irritated very easily when she struggles. This made me SO excited to see her confidence level boost overnight.”

“My son hates reading, i tried every app out there, but nothing like ello! We got our books today and he was excited to actually read, hes in second grade and very behind. They actually asked me what reading level he was in so they can send the correct books for his level, Day one went well hopefully he continues to enjoy reading them!”

“Our family received the first box and my son has enjoyed the experience so far. It has him more excited to read as it allows him to be more independent. My biggest complaint is that the app doesn’t recognize a lot of incorrect words he’s read aloud therefore I still have to watch him closely. Additionally the format of the words in the books sometimes are not reflective of the app. Example: the app shows 5 words on the first line of a page while the book shows 7. I would just like to see the consistency.”

Thank you for this helpful feedback! We are working to make improvements to the app in terms of text consistency between the book and the app. In terms of correcting errors, Ello is always available to support kids via the question mark! One note: Did you know that how we respond to errors while our children read can make a huge difference in their willingness to keep reading? Ello uses best practices to make sure we strike the balance between making sure kids learn from errors, and keeping them motivated and engaged. This one may be a surprise for parents, but literacy specialists know that correcting every error will frustrate kids. While we will bring kids back to review words they miss at the end of the page, we won’t do this for EVERY error, this is purposeful. Remember: if a child is at the right level, they should only be making one error on every two pages. More than that means the book is too hard. I hope this helps!

“My son really loves reading with Ello and wants to use it several times a day. I love it for this since before he hated reading! However, I do not think this aligns all the way with SOR. Ello doesn’t explain the sounds in a word. It just tells the child what they are. My son really enjoys the books but some of them encourage guessing. I’m ok with using because we homeschool and I can teach him things that are missed.”

“My son wasn’t so happy at first until he saw it rewards you with stars to get prizes for the next month he wanted to finish all 5 books in one night!! Definitely recommend such a great app!! & affordable!”

“This program is a great idea however I do wish that there was a virtual only option. This would be more helpful for travel and such if you didn’t have to bring books with you.”
