“I love this scale for its speed, accuracy and durability. My staff has an uncanny ability for breaking things, and this scale has passed the test. It's incredibly accurate, which can cause it to be sensitive when placed on unstable or vibrating surfaces. We normally use a fridge for our counter space, which caused the scale to be unstable, but the problem was solved by placing it just a couple of feet away on an anchored countertop.
The only issue I have is that it can be very confusing to operate without instructions. During the first week we experienced a lot of frustration not knowing how to change the settings and wondering why the values kept changing. Customer Support was very helpful and pointed us to their online user guide. (Why would they not include it with the product?)
My baristas had set this scale aside and stopped using it until I arrived because the could not understand how it worked, despite the instructions I had given them. If the controls were easier to use, would they have understood it better?
Overall, it's a great product. I get giddy just thinking about it.”
“The is technically and esthetically a beautiful designed digital scale for the home or professional barista. I love the auto-tare/start/stop feature. Checkout the 'tips' on the Acaia website for setup of the auto features.. the manual is not as complete as it could be. I have only owned this product for a few weeks but I trust it will last for many years.”
“On the one hand, this is an expensive scale. On the other, it is an exceptional product. It works wonderfully and should do so for a long time thanks to features like: being well built; being waterproof; coming with a nifty little rubber cover; etc. Frankly if I had not used one before looking at the scale, I would almost certainly not have paid that much for it. However, it is worth it. One point of note: This scale can be calibrated by a home user. It also comes with its own 100g calibration weight.
A key feature of this scale is what I call the automatic timer start feature. You set it in the appropriate mode and the scale starts the timer once the liquid hits the cup. I've not seen this feature in any other scale.
I use this scale on my espresso maker and use the pearl to weigh out my portafilter (with ground coffee). This allows me to focus less on resetting a single scale. Yes having both is even more expensive. I think it is worth the price.
So the accuracy of the scale should remain in tact if calibrated regularly. If you are serious about your expresso, you should seriously consider this product.”
“I struggled for a long time to find a reason to spend this much on a scale. And so I didn't. The scale I had worked; it was slow, it didn't really fit on the drip tray, it was of questionable waterproofness. Designed for pour over it just wasn't the right tool for espresso.
So I finally ordered the Lunar and I'm very glad I did. It's compact form factor fits (just barely) on the drip tray of my Rocket R58 without needing to do a balancing act. It's amazingly responsive and very accurate. I ordered mine with the portafilter plate and I very quickly transition from weighing beans to weighing the dosed portafilter to weighing the extraction very naturally.
The iPhone app is excellent as well. For espresso you can record your extraction and see flowrate over time. For pour over it has a remote scale feature so you can time and weigh your extraction even when the gauges are blocked. A very convenient way to work around the small form factor.
This is a fantastic tool that now having used for a couple months points out exactly how frustrating my previous scale was to use. Being so easy to use I use it now every shot and the consistency of my drinks has improved tremendously. Highly recommended accessory for any home or professional barista.”
“An excellent design, this scale is lightning fast and very accurate. It speeds up and simplifies my work. Switching very quickly from accurately weighing coffee in a heavy portafilter to moving it to the machine for weighing shots in a cup requires no more effort than tapping the 'tare' button. The shot timer is also nice.”
