This is a good book filled with poetry that children can ‘grow into’. A good book to pick up again and again at various stages. Illustrations are wonderful!

Don't let the horrible cover throw you off! This book is a gem. It has the right variety of poems for children: classics, new (to us) poems, silly poems, serious poems, poems that make you think, poems that make me tear up, poems that are glorious to read out loud. The only downside at all is that some of the editors clearly voted for their own poetry a little too often. But 98-99% of the poems in this book are significant, fun, majestic, or magical. The illustrations are so vivid that even very young listeners stay interested for long periods of time. When my son was two he had Jabberwocky memorized--all on his own--just from sheer enjoyment of reading this book. Both of my children loved curling up with it, and I really feel that part of their love of language comes from this early experience of poetry. I gave a copy to a friend when her son turned one, and she says that when he was just learning to talk he'd waddle over to the shelf, pull this down, and say, "Poetry!" before plunking in her lap. If you love poetry (or are new to it!) and want to share it with your children, this is a great way to start.
