Precision-tuned to the pentatonic scale, this easy-to-play instrument is like a doodle pad for both hands—every note in the five-note pentatonic scale (D, E, G, A, B) forms a pleasant chord when struck simultaneously with every other note. The only skill needed is a light touch. An ideal introduction to musical expression for young children because no matter which notes are played, the bright, true tones sound wonderful together. The set includes two rubber-headed mallets, a wooden (ash wood with cherry finish) base, eight aluminum tubes, and a song sheet with eight simple songs. To inspire creativity a CD of original music with both soothing and energetic songs is also included. Children can harmonize with the music or the CD can be enjoyed by itself. 20"" x 12"" overall. Ages 4+.

A Christmas gift for 2 1/2 grandson. He loves it and the sound is melodious and not brassy.

This instrument exceeded our expectations. The chime is wonderful and the kids can play with it and make pleasant sounds even if they are not playing actual songs. We needed this as an additional instrument that was easy to play and learn our Pentatonic songs on before we learned them on our flutes. It is made out of quality materials and was an excellent value for the price. My children take much joy out of playing music on it.

This Pipedream was a Christmas gift for my 3-year old granddaughter, who is just beginning to learn about music and dancing. When I showed her Youtube videos of Lionel Hampton, she immediately picked up both hammers in one hand to play the pipes. She commented that Hampton's pipes have many more sounds and that she needs 2 more hammers for her other hand. The pipes are sturdy, can be taken apart and put back together and have a beautiful, simple pentatonic sound.

I ordered this because I liked the idea that every note makes a nice chord with every other note. It has a lovely sound and is quite beautiful. My one complaint is that the tubes are not secured to the base--my son loves taking them off and trying to put them back on, rather than use them in the musical instrument, and I'm always worried that they're going to get damaged. The brochure that comes with the Pipedream suggests that it is intended for older kids/adults. The company (Woodstock Chimes) does make a product for younger children, the Chimealong. Maybe you could consider offering it as an alternative.

Dear Liz, We are delighted that you like the sound and beauty of this item-we couldn't agree more! Because of the way that the tubes "chime" they cannot be secured to the base because by doing so they would not resonate in the same way. They nest nicely into the rubber base-which keeps them from sliding but doesn't change the tone of the instrument. This instrument is appropriate for musical exploration for all ages-be sure younger children have adult supervision until they demonstrate the ability to use this musical instrument properly. Thank you for your recommendation of Chimalong. We are familiar with it, however it is a diatonic instrument (C Scale) and the Pipedream is a pentatonic instrument. The notes of the pentatonic scale can be played in any order and still sound beautiful. We also prefer that the instruments we carry are not color-coded (like the Chimalong) so that children learn to play music by the sound instead of by color. Please note that the tubes of Chimalong are also not adhered to the foam base and can also be slid in and out. Your satisfaction is always guaranteed. You may return any item, for any reason, for a full refund or an exchange for a different item. It is possible our Diatonic Glockenspiel (M307) might be a better match for your child. The keys of this instrument are adhered to the base. Please contact Customer Service at 877-975-3003 or info@montessoriservices.com for assistance if you decide to return or exchange this item.
