First of all I should point out that I was daft enough to get this brand confused with "Herbal Essences" who make the shampoo and conditioner and so incorrectly thought I was trying a brand I knew. Herbal Essentials is actually a small brand founded by a Pakistan born entrepreneur who lives in Dubai and created by a French lab. The ingredients are all natural, it's paraben free and paraffin free and a small slice of global sales go to environmental causes. This gel itself is extremely light and refreshing to apply, it smells faintly medicinal (but not in a bad way at all!) It sinks in easily and doesn't leave any residue or oily feeling. I have combination skin and I tend t know when things don't work rather than when they do! So far this gel hasn't caused any problems with my skin, my only reservation is that my skin has been on the drier side over the winter months and as yet this hasn't managed to cure that.

The Hydra 5 Gel from Herbal Essentials is great for skin that tends to flare up or be a bit unruly at times. It's a gel moisturiser which is light and easily absorbed on the skin. Applying it feels very refreshing and cooling, especially if you suffer from redness or irritation. This product hasn't irritated my skin at all and I'm currently using it as a day and night moisturiser. The active ingredients include aloe vera and honey, which are both great for soothing skin. I'm impressed with this ethical brand, having also tried their Miracle Cleanser, and their skincare products are certainly going to become a staple in my daily routine.

This is certainly a very gentle gel and it's light and soft on the skin, but it absorbs very quickly and actually my face and hands still felt a bit dry after application. I have started using it in combination with the Day Defence Cream from the same brand (which I love) and the effect has improved greatly. I am not particularly prone to outbreaks or other skin issues so maybe I'm being a bit unfair seeing that other reviewers seem to love it, but for my skin, it required a second product to fully hydrate and then it becomes an expensive option.

While the skin of my face doesn't feel softer, this gel worked well in heading off some early red spots. You can tell it's high quality - those who can afford this will not be disappointed. The scent is subtle, and there is a brief cool sensation when you apply the gel, though nothing that lasts longer than a few seconds. A little of the gel goes a long way, and it absorbs very quickly. I've also dabbed the gel on the really dry parts of my hands a few times, and it works well there too. The bottle is small but I have a feeling it's going to last a long time, given how little you need each night.

This is a clear gel; it is not the least bit oily on the hands and face – it feels almost watery, and is absorbed quickly leaving skin feeling soft and smooth. You just need to use a tiny amount too – I find that a pea-sized blob does both my hands and my face. I am very impressed with it, but at the current price of £24 (RRP £30) it is just too expensive to buy on a regular basis.

This is very popular with the teenager in the family and does seem to help with blemished skin. The gel sinks in easily and leaves the skin looking and feeling refreshed. It's a bit pricey for the size but only a small amount is required.

Prior to reviewing this product I had not heard of the Herbal Essentials brand. Paraben, paraffin and SLS - free, Herbal Essentials is cruelty free and a proud supporter of Ô1% for the PlanetÕ. Herbal Essentials donates 1% of its global sales to the not-for-profit organisation that supports environmental protection. This gel Moisturiser is ideal for my oily skin, it left it feeling soft and refreshed - especially with the mint. A little expensive but you do get what you pay for, excellent product.
