“Granted that to be secure, the lock is going to be heavy. But the ‘U’ is so thick and so short/stubby, that the rider needs to have the thinnest of frames secured to the thinnest of poles to have a realistic hope of actually using this product. It certainly is not suitable for even slightly thicker bike frames and normal bike racks or lamp posts.”
“I've been a bicycle lock fanatic for about 35 years - after my first and only bicycle theft in college. I've used Bad Bones, Cuffs, and additional pipe fittings to reinforce the locks I own, from an '85 Citadel, to Kryptonite K-4's, Rock Locks, & NY Fahgettaboudits. I've found that preventing bicycle theft involves trying to stay one step ahead of thieves. So far, so good.
Now that grinders are standard bike theft tools, it's time for security companies to address the problem. Hiplok has. Yes, it's expensive; but so are today's bikes. Especially anything at the middle or high end of the spectrum. "My bike's too nice to lock up!" you say? Hogwash! EVERY bike deserves a quality lock. So unless you eat, sleep, shower, and work with your bike, then you need a quality lock. If you're going to leave your bike anywhere, why not use the lock all the time?
Hiplok has produced a lock that, although stout, is something that riders can carry while running errands or commuting. I also own an Altor SAF lock, which also provides excellent security. However, at 13 lbs., it isn't something most cyclists will want to carry; the Hiplok D1000 is.
I'm glad it pretty much matches the Kryptonite NY Fahgettaboudit mini's dimensions. It will lock a mountain rear wheel through the seat and chain stays to a rack or pole easily. Getting both wheels is more of a challenge and probably only feasible with a road or city bike with narrow tires. (See pictures. I'll use a cable and/or locking skewers for the front wheel on this bike, since the wheels are too fat to lock both this way.)
So a big thanks to Hiplok for addressing the current epidemic of bike theft. Now let's hope more products entering the market bring prices down.
PS Now I'm hoping for Ferosafe and Proteus security chains to hit the market so we can properly secure bikes in storage an on the backs of our vehicles.”
