Hiplok D1000 Reviews

I've been a bicycle lock fanatic for about 35 years - after my first and only bicycle theft in college. I've used Bad Bones, Cuffs, and additional pipe fittings to reinforce the locks I own, from an '85 Citadel, to Kryptonite K-4's, Rock Locks, & NY Fahgettaboudits. I've found that preventing bicycle theft involves trying to stay one step ahead of thieves. So far, so good. Now that grinders are standard bike theft tools, it's time for security companies to address the problem. Hiplok has. Yes, it's expensive; but so are today's bikes. Especially anything at the middle or high end of the spectrum. "My bike's too nice to lock up!" you say? Hogwash! EVERY bike deserves a quality lock. So unless you eat, sleep, shower, and work with your bike, then you need a quality lock. If you're going to leave your bike anywhere, why not use the lock all the time? Hiplok has produced a lock that, although stout, is something that riders can carry while running errands or commuting. I also own an Altor SAF lock, which also provides excellent security. However, at 13 lbs., it isn't something most cyclists will want to carry; the Hiplok D1000 is. I'm glad it pretty much matches the Kryptonite NY Fahgettaboudit mini's dimensions. It will lock a mountain rear wheel through the seat and chain stays to a rack or pole easily. Getting both wheels is more of a challenge and probably only feasible with a road or city bike with narrow tires. (See pictures. I'll use a cable and/or locking skewers for the front wheel on this bike, since the wheels are too fat to lock both this way.) So a big thanks to Hiplok for addressing the current epidemic of bike theft. Now let's hope more products entering the market bring prices down. PS Now I'm hoping for Ferosafe and Proteus security chains to hit the market so we can properly secure bikes in storage an on the backs of our vehicles.

After a few weeks with it: +: very good impression of durability great finish, soft covering is great to protect bike easy to open/close -: a bit short for some usages no bike support provided very expensive It's only the day you'll find your expensive e-bike protected by an Hiplok with evidences of cutting that you'll post an extremly positive review. :o)

This is a very high quality lock. It would be better for my purposes if it was longer and wider. I am not able to lock the rear wheel and frame of my bicycle to a solid object. I realize this would make the lock more expensive but it would be worth it to me.

While this is a pricey lock, the almost guaranteed level of security, along with thoughtful design by people who clearly use their products makes it the top choice for bike locks

Why loose the belt-hook that made it a “hip lock” carryable on one’s hip? Stupid that it’s gone, now it’s just another heavy, difficult to carry lock, with an eye-watering price tag.

On the pro side the D1000 seems like a really secure lock. However it's small size really limits where it can be used. It's really heavy, (think carrying a small bowling ball in your pack, and without a dedicated bike mount it's more than likely to be left at home.
