Hold with one hand and lean slightly forwards over the aerator so that you can apply gently downward pressure on the shaft with the other hand. Now walk forwards and aerate. At the end of the run, pull it up and DROP it into position for the next run (watch your toes though); this sticks it well into the lawn ready to aerate....it's that simple.TIP: If you've got a lot of lawn to do cut some foam pipe insulation and cover the handle - very comfy

I found using the aerator easy to use & assemble and use it regularly however it could do with a foot plate above spikes to put extra pressure on inserting into the garden occasionally

A Lawnsmith recommended product does what is says on the tin! Only gripe (hence 4 stars) was that the bolts holding the handle sections together are too short and the grip part of the grip-nut does not engage the thread. I had to replace with longer bolts!

I found it difficult to achieve full penetration of the spikes by pushing the handle.l discovered a more effective method by putting one foot on the bar whilst pushing however my foot slipped off on one occasion and fractured a spike mounting . I did complete my lawn spiking satisfactorily.

Lawn has to be soft to function adequately.
