Own an Alpha 100 and wanted something easier to use when hunting. Garmin Pro 550 Plus is the perfect transmitter. One handed operator without having to look.

This is perfect you can track 3 dogs for 2 to 4 miles more than enough. You can instantly correct the dog while he is making a mistake not fumble with other hand helds then its to late the dog will not know why he is being corrected. Pared with the watch showes up to 3 dogs without using the toggle.

I had originally bought the Alpha 10 unit and found it really difficult for training -- I wanted tone or vibrate for in the field reminders or reinforcement with the ability to locate my little French Brit if he was on point and I couldn't see him. The Alpha 10 put tracking first - lots of features, etc. that I am sure work well for some, but it made training and toggling between tone, vibrate, stim pretty difficult. At times, I would look at the unit only to find that somehow I was on some screen and didn't know how to get back. The 550 plus is much simpler. Its a training first handheld with a small window at the bottom that give direction (arrow), distance in yds or ft depending on how far, and a stop sign icon if the dog has stopped. My only complaint is sometimes I am not sure if the reading is in yds or ft since the letters are tiny and I don't wear readers when hunting, obviously. First time wild bird hunting, we finished a draw and had to walk about 200 yards across drifted snow and mud (it was quickly all melting on us) to get to the trucks. Got there and we had all four hunters and three other dogs, but no French Brit. I looked down and saw he was on point 228 yards back somewhere in the draw. I made my way back, found him on point, flushed a covey of quail, and he made a nice retrieve. He wasn't going to move and neither were those quail. The spotty snow made him almost invisible - I'm not sure how long it would have taken to find him without the 500plus show me exactly where to go.

We use it 365 days a year It’s great for training and hunting We live on a large property and we never leave the house without it so we have a good way of keeping up with our dogs all the time.

Enough bells and whistles for enjoying a hunt in chukar country. The refresh rate is a small annoyance with a fast moving dog, but otherwise this is perfect for someone who wants to enjoy the hunt and not spend time with technology that frustrates us troglodytes.
