I don't usually feed my hydrangeas. They sometimes get a scant handful of homemade garden compost and they seem perfectly happy with that. This year, however, it seemed to rain non-stop over winter and then, when spring arrived (early) the days were hot and the nights were cold. And then it turned windy. My normally happy hydrangeas have hated this. The first (far too early) bud break struggled to make leaves and the leaves remained small and crinkled in appearance. many of them turned autumnal colours during a spell of colder nights. Then they suffered an attack of leaf miner (which I treated with insecticide as soon as I noticed the damage). Overall the leaves of the bushes remained a sickly, pale colour and the flower heads were small: very, very small. Thankfully, some new, far too pale, normal-sized growth sprouted in the protected centre of the bushes, and I am therefore reasonably certain that I am dealing with weather damage and with any luck, with a bit of help, the hydrangeas may recover for next year. I have not used the Vitax Hydrangea Feed before now but I have used other Vitax products and they have always worked for me - without fail and exceedingly well. So, as an experiment, I have applied one top dressing of their fertiliser - it is not exactly the right time of year to do this but I have done it anyway - and colour is seeping back in to the leaves and the flower heads are beginning to expand and open. All over the bushes are looking much healthier than they did. Most of the leaves are still abnormally small and distorted, and many of them are autumn tinged. This sort of leaf damage cannot be remedied but the plants now look as though they will be able to survive until next year. The fertiliser appears to be fairly quick acting. I noticed a difference overnight and by the end of the week was very pleased by and thankful for the improvement in leaf quality.
