Gameplay is fantastic and using the app can be tricky at first but is easy once you get used to the layout. Cardboard punchouts for terrain are alright. I foresee them breaking of being damaged at some point after long term use.

If you don’t like technology mixing with your cardboard, then pass this one up. Otherwise, this is a really well done game akin to Mansions of Madness 2e. The 3D terrain is fantastic and the quests are fun. The minis are exceptionally well done. I have a more detailed review on BGG (username Marzuki) but the tl;dr version is if you have the budget and like dungeon crawlers with app integration, give this a shot.

Game is fun in general. The app is very useful and controls things very well. One star removed because fiddling with gameplay elements (that the app now does) has been replace with fiddling with setting up terrain. It is not terrible, but it causing the game to feel disjointed a little.

The only reason to get this game is to repurpose the miniatures and the terrain. You stare at the app 99% of the game. The writing in really bad in my opinion and the mechanics are very bare bones dungeon crawler.

Have greatly enjoyed my copy. The miniatures are excellent, the terrain is very good, the App hides what is coming and tracks everything (so no book-keeping), the scenario design is very creative, and the game looks great on the table and is very fun to play.

Pre-ordered, then read a lot of negative reviews about the game before it came out and was worried. Now that I have played it, I am absolutely loving it. Have played with family and friends and everyone has had a blast. If you don't like App integration in your board games, then its not for you. I find, however that the app allows me to keep track of things much better than having a ton of cards all over the place. There are still plenty of cards and tokens to keep me happy. My older kids were very impressed with the amount of inclusivity in the game. While the price point is high, the miniatures are amazing and a joy to paint. Having started two separate campaigns, I was surprised that there were lots of differences in the missions that allowed me to be surprised even on the second play through. As the always DM in our D&D campaigns, it was nice to be able to sit down with friends and just be a player for once! I've uploaded a couple pictures of minis I've begun to paint. Please keep in mine they are bare plastic right out of the box.

Mechanically this feels like the best of the FF dungeon crawlers. Thematically obviously you still can't beat Imperial Assault. The moment-to-moment incorporates all of the mechanics they have been tinkering with in other games for years- card flipping from the Marvel card game, preparing from LotR, spending limited resources to turn wilds into hits from LotR, and more. The app experience feels most like the Lord of the Rings game, which I see as a positive. The app is doing a lot of heavy lifting. You can add or remove players to a campaign on-the-fly because you only add or remove the number of heroes going on a mission, not the number of players (great choice). By far the most unexpected thing I enjoyed about this, despite the HC bgg comments I've read, is the 3D dungeon. It is AWESOME. While playing, I often had to get up and rotate around the table to really see what was going on, manipulate my character, and get a sense of the layout. Some might see this as a distraction but I felt more immersed, and I cared more about what I was doing because I could see an ominously placed altar at the highest level of the board, and the "point of no return" drop down to the next area. The miniatures are easily the best FF has made, super detailed. And I know the game is expensive ($140 if you get it from non-FF store like Miniature Market or local BG store), but I have to laud the production value. Each mini comes with its own storage space in the box so you know they won't get damaged or bent or anything. The only major thing that I expected to carry over from recent FF games and didn't is that there are not alternating activations between heroes and enemies. Not sure if they just felt this mechanic was inextricable from the Descent experience, but I have enjoyed the layer of strategy of managing enemy actions that I get in the IA app or LotR. I may add more detail as I keep playing, but I am super hype about this experience and thought I'd toss out my impressions in case anyone is on the fence given the price point.
