I bought this to play solo. I am 15 hours in playing with my 5 year old son and having a blast. The app makes it so that he and I can play together. He's engaged with the board and dice rolling as well as the on screen combat. Additionally, not having to keep track of all the stats (thank you app) let's us move along quickly enough that he remains engaged. I'm having a blast. There are some cons though: 1) I'd not recommend this game if you don't have a way to cast the app to a large screen right by your table. 2) This game would be a nightmare to play as a group specifically because of the app. 3) The writing is pretty mediocre and stereotypical. Nothing original or memorable. 4) There is A LOT of text to read in the app. This is a slog because of #3...so I just skim it and DM my way through it with my son! 5) The app is awesome for combat--it streamlines it so well. It's awful for everything else. This game could have honestly been a complete app for $6.99 without the $140 of board game pieces. it feels a lot like a video game and very little like a board game. 6) There is not a lot of content for what you pay. All in all this is a keeper at 5 stars for me ONLY because of the enjoyment I get with my son. Otherwise I'd rather play other dungeon crawlers that are more big party friendly and don't have to fiddle with a tiny iPad screen to know what's going on. Fun side note--my boy takes all the descent minis and terrain and builds his own maps and runs his own quests solo. He supplements it with my D&D/Pathfinder stuff and has an absolute blast. I am thrilled to own this game and I'm having a ton of fun with it...but as a traditional board game it isn't great and there are much better options.

Descent is fantastic! Takes a bit of set up to build the 3d terrain but overall a really smooth experience. The app is a lot of reading but the combat and tracking is really helpful. Can't wait for additional content l!

The miniatures are super high quality. That would be one huge reason for the higher price. You only have to put the 3D terrain together once. It takes about the same amount time to set up the board as you progress. I have had zero issues with the APP. It speeds up a lot of issues with book keeping and shuffling etc. Pay no attention to the earlier review bombs on sites like Board Game Geek.
