“Plantopia is an adorable game that you can play with the usual amount of people (not much more or less). The art is super cute, my friends and I giggle at the puns, and it's very easy to learn. It's not one of the classic games out there that people already know about, so this is the game I bring to spice up the game night a little bit.”
“It's like Race for the Galaxy and not like it and maybe that's a good thing. I like Race for the Galaxy but introducing it to people is challenging.
The graphics are very cute, making it a conversation piece for my nieces already. The flow of the game is pretty straightforward. While I never had a problem with the follow mechanic in Race for the Galaxy, it is an obvious "game" mechanism with no particular thematic underpinning. In this game, it is unclear why players can control the weather, but it is pretty clear that the weather affects everyone.
I really like the puns, but they may be painful for some people. Also, sadly they are mostly English specific which limits its cross cultural cuteness a little (if you like puns).
It's also a relatively low interaction game and it runs a bit long with the standard rules (4 special plants). We haven't played it much but we have cut it a short somewhat.
Production quality is decent with relatively stiff cards with a slight whiff of vinegar which I hope will fade. I heard a reviewer complaining about fingerprints on the shiny weather cards. Sure enough I checked and they do hold fingerprints. I hadn't noticed and it's not a problem for me.
It's not Race for the Galaxy, but it is more niece-friendly, partly with its more fun theming/presentation and with its lighter combos. (Of course perhaps this game will reveal deeper combos with more plays, that remains to be seen.)”
“Behind is cute artwork, Plantopia is clean tableau building à-la-Race for the Galaxy but simpler. It's fast, a little thinky and the solo mode is great. A keeper for my family.”
“Plantopia is a quick, fun game that is easy to learn and is great for casual game nights. The characters are all creative and adorable. One downside is that some of the card effects are hard to decipher as they are pictographs. The quality of the cards and box is excellent and you can tell a lot of care was put into this game. Although, since the box and some cards are holofoil, it will show you greasy fingerprints.”
“The game is very well done. The cards are of very good quality with funny pictures. The game is easy to understand and has good replayability. A must have in your collection.”
