Poul Henningsen originally designed a three-shade system in 1926. After winning the gold metal for his six-shade Paris Lamp at the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris, he was granted a contract to design lighting for the new Forum building in Copenhagen, Denmark. This building was to be an international car exhibit. Henningsen's goal was to eliminate any visual glare that lighting fixtures would reflect off the shiny cars, as well as making sure the entire car was well lit.

The lamp Henningsen created for Forum would be the basis for the three-shade system. Inspired by the logarithmic spiral, Henningsen was the first person to take a truly scientific approach to lamping solutions. Each shade level reflects the light creating glare-free illumination and even light distribution. The three-shade design was further developed into a lamp series.
