Breaking them in took some dedicated work, but that doesn't mean it was painful. Follow the advice they give for spraying the shoes and wearing them damp with socks to stretch them out, and give it some time. Even after that I did need to spray them down again and stretch out by hand in some particular areas where my foot was being squeezed, but with the weave of the shoe there is a lot of flexibility of shape.
