The best mortar and pestle. Easy to use. I use it to crush flowers to make potpourri.

When it arrived, I was surprised by its small size, but it has proven to be more effective at crushing egg shells and spices/seeds than I was expecting. With a traditional mortar and pestle, one must have complete control over the pestle and the amount of pressure used or your contents will go flying! With this low profile, elliptical version, one must only need to press down to crush or grind the contents. As a test, I lightly crushed cardamom pods, removed the skins, and then attempted to grind the cardamom seeds. It worked! These seeds have always been difficult for me to grind in a traditional way. For that, I think this tool can tackle many different kinds of ingredients.

This is the perfect size and shape for our 18mos-to-3yr-olds to use in egg shell crushing. They press down firmly, lift the pestle, regather the shells and then press down again to make the shell fragments even smaller. They pour the crushed shell into a dish which is carried out to our garden table, where they empty the contents into a container of planting soil. A small hand rake is then used by them to mix shell and earth (which will be used in future garden planting). Then the child returns the empty dish to the egg crushing tray. This is a very popular activity and is successfully performed by the very young.
