If you are just learning to sharpen, this would be a good choice for your first stone. Case doubles as a holder in use, there is a small maintenance stone included, stored in a little depression in bottom of case. It's for flattening the water stone when it wears in use. You'll want a bigger flattening stone eventually, but it's a nice thing to include- Very good "feel" for a man made water stone. Can be used "splash and go", doesn't require soaking. Makes mud quickly yet doesn't dish exceptionally fast. Whoever designed this one knew their business. I have several other famous brands and grits of man made stones and a few natural stones (Shaptons, Arkansas stones, etc.). Did not NEED this stone, got it on recommendation of another experienced kitchen knife user/sharpener. He was right, it has very good feedback, cuts fast enough to take on a really dull knife yet is fine enough to provide a good, slightly "grabby" edge for all around kitchen work. You COULD get by cutting veges with just this stone and a sheet of newspaper for stropping all day in a pro kitchen. I have used this to sharpen Swedish stainless, Japanese white #2 carbon steel and Chinese 420 and 440 stainless steel near equivalents. It worked well on all- I've sharpened a couple of S35VN knives as well, worked OK with a little more effort and attention on those too (harder, more wear resistant high end particle metalurgy steels will always take more work, not the stone's fault).
