“A first time buyer, I bought a 5lb bag and innoculated with 10cc's.. After about a month at about 76 degrees it looked like about 20% colonized so I broke it all up. In another month it was fully colonized. I lowered the temperature to about 72 degrees and I cut the entire top off with paper clips and had the first mushrooms 6 days later, about 25 grams dry. I live in a dry climate and the cake looked dried out so I added "a little" water with the paper clips. My second flush didn't turn out very well, only about 15 grams dry in 7 days but I think it was user error. I let the cake get too dry, I should have misted it a few times a day and gave it more air. After that flush I dunked the cake for 12 hours underwater in the bag, then dumped the water out and rinsed the cake. I poked a few holes in the bottom of the bag for any excess water to drain. It looks like a third flush is coming on strong. For this third flush I cut the whole top of the bag off about 8 inches up from the bottom and used the top portion as a hood, misting the cake lightly and more into the hood, fanning it after the mist twice a day. The only issue I had is all the mushrooms grew out of the side of the cake even though I used the rubber band method. That is really not a big deal but made them harder to harvest. I'm not sure of the reason for that but maybe it was because I let the top of the cake dry out too much early on. I'm pretty satisfied, I feel confident I can do better on the next round, two 3 lb bags.”
