Drove 3 hrs to enjoy WNC weekend, but my vacation home water was out. I was pleased to find a room with even better views. It was a lower price than I typically pay for near interstate hotels. Enjoyed hiking Appalachain Trail, which is 100 ft from Dogwood rooms. Fun conversations with the friendly vistors and NOC staff. Each section has a shared bathroom and shower but I never had to wait and they very were clean. I liked my room so much; stayed another night after my house water was fixed.

This was about the 5th time I have stayed at the Dogwood while at the NOC, and everything was fine ... until the last night. Someone broke into my truck, stole my wallet and cell phone and some other stuff. Cathy K. came to the rescue and got me a swipe card so I could get into my room. Having been on the Chattooga rafting that day, after talking to the sheriff's deputy and filing an incident report, I took a shower across from my room. When I went to return to my room, the swipe card did not work for the room lock. Still worked for the bathroom and the main door to the Dogwood, just didn't work for the room. Ended up sleeping on the couch in the common area in my shorts using chair cushions to try to keep warm. Came a big storm during the wee hours of the morning, knocking out power halfway back to Bryson City. About 7 am some AT hikers loaned me some shoes and I walked down to my truck (the one with the broken window, the one that was broken into the night before) and got my own shoes and a fleece top. Took a walk to the General Store where things were in an uproar due to the power outage. They could not make me a new swipe card, but one of the employees (Tosh??) got a master swipe card and drove me back to the Dogwood and let me in to my room. Nice guy, went out of his way to help me. I hope that you catch the thief who broke into my truck and into a van from Ohio sitting next to my truck as well. I feel bad for the NOC. What a violation! After 32 years of coming to NOC to have this happen really made me feel bad for you all. I will be back! And I will stay at the Dogwood again. Phil Pickett
