This is the dental version of 'Where There Is No Doctor'. It is well written and well illustrated with a few clearly reproduced photographs and many excellent line drawings. This handbook’s focus is primarily the Caribbean and Africa, but again would be useful anywhere there is ignorance, poverty, superstition, misinformation, poor hygiene, bad water, malnutrition, and lack of modern medical care. This handbook devotes considerable space to education and prevention. It also shows how to treat many common dental complaints, although it frequently recommends seeking professional medical attention. This handbook shows how to make field expedient exam instruments and scalers, and it also has a suggested list of dental instruments and extraction forceps by name and number. This too is an excellent, potentially life-saving handbook. Both of these books (Where There Is No Doctor, Where There Is No Dentist) give very specific suggestions as to supplies and equipment, almost all of which are available at reasonable cost via the Internet. The average layperson may not be able to use much or most of the specialized instruments and equipment, but that’s not to say that you might not come in contact with a trained medical professional who COULD use the equipment and supplies that YOU have on hand to save your life, or the life of a loved one. And in keeping with the whole “prevention” theme – if you have a dental problem you’ve been putting off having treated for whatever reason, I STRONGLY recommend that you make an appointment and get it squared away now, in a modern dentist’s office with a genuine, professional DENTIST, electricity and running water and ANESTHETIC and sterile, condition specific instruments, as opposed to waiting until you have to try to treat your problem yourself with a flashlight, mirror, razor blade and a pair of vice grips. The clock is ticking; act now.
