This rack is incredible and amazingly well-engineered, but it's not cheap (you get what you pay for). Assembly is not trivial and takes about an hour, but nothing is out of the realm of someone with a basic assembly knowledge (i.e knows how to use a wrench and screw driver). Once installed, I have received numerous compliments when loading and unloading bikes, so be prepared to answer lots of questions! I'm thinking of asking RockyMounts for a marketing bonus, as I'm spending more and more of my time demonstrating the rack, gathering more converts in the process.

I was looking for a bike rack that would work on both my tacoma and my off-road trailer with a rear kitchen. When looking at the other big brands it was going to require me to get a separate swing arm, in order to open the tailgate properly and more important getting into the kitchen of the trailer. Then I found the RockyMounts BackStage, this rack is exactly what I've been looking for in one package. When it is mounted to either the truck or the trailer's rear hitch it is absolutely solid, there is none of the irritating wobble that is so common. One bit of advice when you are installing it is to gently lift up on the side where the swing arm is when putting the bolt in, as the weight of the swing arm causes it to go in on an angle if you don't compensate for this, seems to be a thing that most reviews mention . This thing is solid and I am incredibly happy with my purchase, it was definitely built with mountain-bikers in mind.

I just finished installing/putting together this rack. The directions are pretty straightforward. All of the parts are identified via a chart. It goes together in about an hour or so. I wanted a platform rack and a swing out feature. The only other option is KUAT, it gets expensive to “build your own” swing out system with KUAT though. The swing out part alone is $329. Pay attention to the details with the KUAT racks, they dont include all of the features on the Transfer model. So may the time your done, you’ll be around $900 or so. This rack has everything you’ll need. the locking hitch and the cable lock are included (not so with the KUAT transfer. The quality of this rack is awesome. Ease of use once its assembled is impressive. The 2 reasons I got this were the swing out feature would allow me to open my tailgate and the platform loading of bikes seemed simpler. I can safely say I am satisfied. Do your research but buy this rack if you’ve got a truck.
