Ratio Six Coffee Machine (Series 1) Reviews

Using this coffee maker is cumbersome. There are two detached canisters and 2 different lids that must be juggled throughout the process. First, you have to pour water into an attached glass canister through a small opening. It's easy to splash water outside of the intended area. Next, you place the basket canister back on top of the carafe after adding a filter with coffee, then a the flanged lid. After brewing runs, you pull out the stacked canisters meaning the flange flicks hot water on you since it fits up under the shower head. This is unavoidable and a known design flaw according to customer support. The carafe is OK. The lid feels a bit cheap when tightening it. Overall, the coffee output has been good. However, given the difficulty to clean the attached components, namely the water tank, I worry that even the coffee quality will diminish over time. If you want to feel good when using your coffee maker and are looking for a simple design, this is not the coffee maker for you.

Overall, I am happy with the Ratio Six but it certainly is not a perfect machine and I have to question whether too much focus was put on design over functionality. Yes, the carafe lid is a train wreck (even the “new” one), but I think it is something you can adjust to and you just need to know it’s going to make a mess. The rubber part around the brew head splashes you with scalding water when you remove the carafe and filter. The on/off button is extremely sensitive and I am not sure if it’s possible to interrupt brewing if you accidentally turn the machine on too soon. Simply brushing up against it will cause the machine to go into action. If you can overlook these things, and you probably can, the machine makes a great cup of coffee. Ultimately, that’s the most important thing. But do not buy this if you’re going to be distracted by a few oversights and nuances.

I purchased this as a gift for a seasoned coffee professional who has passed along his rating of "five stars!". That said, it could just as easily be enjoyed by anyone seeking consistently great brew results. The design is smart and chic (white matches our Niche grinder!) - it's a perfect affordable luxury and a welcome upgrade from our aging Bonavita. I'm already wishing I'd also snagged the glass carafe.

Beautiful machine, makes great coffee. Noticeably better than my bonavita metropolitan, which made very good coffee! Carafe is terrible or I’m incompetent. It is very difficult to pour coffee into a cup and not dribble all over the counter. I’d like to think that in my 36 years of living I’ve acquired the proper skills to screw a lid on a carafe and pour into a cup without spilling. Sometimes it’s like the coffee is leaking from between the carafe and the collar on top of it and not from the lid, it’s maddening. Fortunately for Ratio the coffee is good enough to overcome this downfall.

Hi Kurt, Thanks for the feedback! We take notes on customer feedback like this and will use it to inform future design changes. You can request a new lid here: https://ratiocoffee.com/pages/ratio-six-thermal-carafe-lid-replacement There might be an issue with your lid that is causing this. Glad you're liking the coffee!
