About Red Paddle Co:

Once upon a board, Red Paddle Co-founder, John Hibbard, realised there might be a better way of doing things. It was 2008 and paddleboarding was just getting going. As he paddled along on a heavy composite SUP, he had this crazy idea that it could be made better with an inflatable board.

It wasn’t just a hunch either. Having spent over a decade as a full-time, sponsored competitor on the professional windsurfing world tour, John was getting pretty weary of pleading with, and generally avoiding airline check-in staff due to the mountain of cumbersome windsurfing kit required for his numerous international trips (it was tough, but someone had to do it!). A problem, he realised, that every paddleboarder the world over would have to face if they wanted to travel anywhere with their standard hard board.

I bought the 2019 model of the Sport new in Spring 2020. After reading reviews of various boards and brands, I had narrowed down to between the 12'6 sport and 12'6 voyager. I talked to staff at Red Paddle via email about the two boards to narrow down which would suit my needs best. I love this board. It is my first paddle board but I wanted something high quality, fast, stiff, with good tracking, and good for day trips, I could learn on and progress on rather than have something I want to upgrade in a short period of time. My first time out I found it very unstable even kneeling on it for the first hour or so as I had never been on a paddle board before, but after a couple of dips in the water, I was up and standing the first day, although unstable and my legs were shaky and felt like they were on fire trying to stabilize the board. The reason for this is partly due to the water is never calm where I paddle. There is either power boat wake or wave build up and often white caps from wind flowing down the long stretch of wide river. After a couple of times out, I was gliding across the lake. I am 260-265lbs and 6' tall and it supports me well. It is fast, tracks great, and nice and stiff, and stable once you learn how to balance and brace with the paddle in choppy water conditions. Boat wake coming from different direction from the waves caused by the wind still catches me off guard though but I am getting better at it.
