The Funhouse [Collector's Edition] Reviews

Director Tobe Hooper (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Poltergeist) pays affectionate tribute to various classic horror movies in this tale of two teenage couples who spend the night in a sleazy carnival funhouse.
On her first date with Buzz (Cooper Huckabee, True Blood), Amy (Elizabeth Berridge, Amadeus) disobeys her father and goes to the carnival with Richie (Miles Chapin, Hair) and Liz (Largo Woodruff), but their first date may end up as their last. After witnessing a murder, the four terrified teens are trapped in the maze of the funhouse and stalked by a real monster, a horribly deformed killer who lurks among the freakish exhibits to butcher them one by one.
Also stars Sylvia Miles (Midnight Cowboy) and Kevin Conway (in three roles). Featuring special makeup designs by Academy Award®-winner Rick Baker (An American Werewolf In London, Ed Wood).

The Fun House is exactly what the title says. It fun. Its a great 80's flick that in my personal mind feels like Hooper's early work. It has a great 70's grind House feel, it feels gritty and grimy. Gunther, the creature of the fun house is terrifying, in a 'Rubber monster' kind of way. The collectors edition of the film is great. The transfer is nice and glossy, for the feel of the film. the extras while spare get the point across, especially with a great interview with the barker himself Kevin Conroy!. Its another great release from Scream Factory. Good Job Scream!

Of the movies in his body of work, THE FUNHOUSE has to be the most intense, IF not the goriest, and it all has to do with atmosphere. At the top of his game, nobody could do gloom, doom and dread like Tobe, and just about every frame is stuffed with it. And the MVP's here are Kevin Conway, of course, William Finley and the always-dependable Sylvia Miles. After EATEN ALIVE, one of his most deranged and well-executed ensemble pieces.
