From the screenwriter of Psycho comes another terrifying tale of horror!Wylie (Michael Sarrazin, The Reincarnation of Peter Proud) and Kassia (Gayle Hunnicutt, The Legend of Hell House) are looking for a way to get their hands on the hefty inheritance of Wylie's cat-loving, wealthy Aunt Danny (Eleanor Parker, The Sound of Music). But there is one little problem: Wylie suffers from a severe case of ailurophobia – the fear of cats. In order for their plot to succeed, the pair must first eliminate Aunt Danny's legions of feline companions ... which ends up being much more difficult than expected.

Shout Factory has done a truly outstanding job of bringing EYE OF THE CAT to home viewers (shockingly, this 1969 film had never been released on video or DVD). The print is a beautifully remastered copy with vibrant colors. When this movie was shown on TV, the network thought the original was too intense (and sexual) for viewers, so they brought in a couple of the supporting actors to film additional scenes to replace the scenes they planned to cut for the network showing. This totally changed the ending of the film (an army of cats becomes one single cat) and of course made the film less potent. Now, Shout Factory has restored the film to its original cut. (That said, this is less a horror film than a delightfully twisted and twisting thriller that keeps you on your toes as you try to figure out which characters are allies and which are plotting against each other.) Shout Factory has truly gone the extra mile by also including the TV version of the film (which has not been remastered and looks pretty faded and ragged) as an extra. Once you've watched the pristine original version, you should check out a few scenes in the TV version to see how TV butchered the film. You probably won't watch the whole TV version, but you should compare the scenes when Gayle Hunnicutt first meets Michael Sarrazin by walking in on him and an unclad woman. A huge chuck of dialog and even a fight scene is cut. Then stay with it for Sarrazin being brought back to Hunnicutt's beauty parlor to be washed, oiled and shorn... and see how the trunicated version cuts all the sexual innuendo. Then jump to the climax to watch how the TV network recut, reshot and ruined the film's ending. Written by Joseph Stefano (PSYCHO, THE NAKED EDGE), this is a fun thrill ride. It's wonderfully homoerotic (Sarrazin and Tim Henry are always losing their shirts or walking around in towels) and It's also fun to try to figure out the relationship between Eleanor Parker (as their late father's mistress) and the two brothers--she lusts for Sarrazin and seems to hate Henry. This is also the best film directed by David Lowell Rich (MADAME X, ROSIE!, A FAMILY UNSIDE DOWN, SATAN'S SCHOOL FOR GIRLS). It's stylish and confident. The use of split screens at the beginning is excellent and excellerates the suspense. Don't miss this long-lost gem that has been beautifully restored and rescued by Shout Factory.

Excellent blu ray of a very rare movie. Shout have done a great job with this one. The picture quality is 10/10. It looks every bit as good as when the film was first released in 1969. on it's rare showings the color has looked faded and blurred. Now it looks clean, bright and sharp and the lashings of blood looks blood red. A very good thriller with an excellent cast. Ealoner Parker is especially good as the ageing rich recluse who is the target of .... Exciting, gripping with lots of gore . A very good watch.
