That particular check valve is meant for use in the Hunter Pro Spray heads only, so it certainly wouldn't have worked if you attempted to install it in an I-20 or any other Hunter rotor. Most versions of the I-20 come with a check valve installed, but if you previously had the version minus the check valve you're correct that the best way to upgrade that would be to purchase the I-20 with the built in check valve.
