The spark igniter does not work, I have to light the fire with a match. The fire ring has 3 bad welds that shoot flames out and is causing the ring to discolor.

Dana, We're sorry the spark igniter is giving you trouble. The spark igniter is a sensitive item that needs several things working together in harmony in order to work properly. Review all of these steps to ensure a proper installation: • Check the battery. Believe it or not, this is a very common issue. This spark module takes 1 x AAA battery. Being outdoors, it’s common for batteries to corrode faster than when indoors. Make sure the Positive side (+) is facing towards the push button. • Is the pan properly grounded? On the under side of the burner pan, there should be 2 wires. 1 from the bottom of the probe that goes to the spark module, and 1 that attaches to the pan by one of the plate screws that also goes to the spark module. It doesn’t matter which wire goes into which port on the spark module, whether A to B or A to A. Make sure that the ground wire is secure. • The igniter probe has a secondary prong that must be positioned approximately ¼” apart. If it’s too far apart, or too close together, it will not spark properly. You might hear the “click click click”, but there’s no visible spark. Make sure that the probes are at the correct distance. If they are, you should see a constant blue spark while simultaneously hearing the “click click click” sound. • The spark needs to be positioned near a burner hole. On the fire ring, there are many burner holes. Sometimes the ring spins and the hole isn’t aligned with the spark. Make sure a burner hole is right near the spark. • If you are trying to light your burner WITHOUT lava or fire glass, the gas is shooting out of the burner too fast and the spark igniter may not ignite the gas. The igniter works better when there is lava rock or fire glass covering the burner. This causes the gas to “dissipate” and spread more evenly beyond just the burner hole. The spark will catch and ignite the gas much easier once the gas dissipates. • The spark needs to be positioned above the fire glass. If too low, the spark will get interrupted by the fire glass and not work properly. Just like a candle needs oxygen to work, the spark is only effective if it can “breathe”. • Make sure the spark probes are clean. Over time, they can collect dust or corrode due to being outdoors. This reduces the conductivity of the probe and may prevent the full spark from happening. Remember, the battery is only 1.5 volts, and to light the gas, we want all 1.5 volts. If the probes are dirty or corroded, you may be seeing a spark but at a lower voltage, which will not be hot enough to light the gas. If you have tried all of these steps but still have issues igniting your burner, it is possible one of the parts is defective. There are 3 main parts to this kit: 1) SPARK MODULE 2) IGNITER PROBE & 3) GROUND WIRE. To identify the part that is defective: • Spark Module o Is the spark module making the clicking sound and generating power? If yes, this is likely not the issue. o If you don’t hear the clicking sound and nothing happens after putting in a new battery, check to see that the “spring” is inside the push button. Sometimes the spring falls out when changing the battery. This spring is what enables the battery to create the circuit which creates the power. o If you put in a new battery and the spring is installed properly, but you are still not hearing the clicking spark sound, you likely need a new spark module. • Igniter Probe o Are any of the wires underneath the pan cinched or pinched? Is a wire severed? If yes, this needs to be replaced. o Is it properly connected to the back of the spark module? Double check this. o Is the secondary wire properly grounded to the pan? Double check this. o Did the ground wire “loop” that is connected to the pan come loose or break off? If yes, this ground wire needs to be replaced. o It is possible that over time, the igniter probe becomes corroded. If so, this will need to be replaced. Overall, this spark kit is a very inexpensive alternative to lighting your fire pit without a lighter. These do tend to fail over time and require maintenance and proper installation in order to work well. Hope this info helps.
