Kikusui “Karakuchi” Reviews

4 Rating 23 Reviews
This met the tasting notes, it was clean and dry with a nice amount of umami. It was not what I would describe as complex but was still enjoyable. I tried it at several different temperatures and I preferred it slightly warmer than room temperature with served chilled a close second. At higher temperatures the flavor seemed a little washed out. While I prefer a little more sweetness, at this price point, it is worth trying out, especially if you like drier sake.

This is a luke warm review for something that someone else would like much better.. The label states this is "light" as opposed to "full bodied". I guess I am not a fan of light sake. Just didn't seem to be much there.

This was a hit for a crowd that is a mixed bag of sake drinkers and new to sake. I enjoyed it but was a little soft for my usual taste.

We found this one to be stronger than Kikusui Junmai Ginjo. It, however, got somewhat milder in 20~30 minutes after the bottle was opened. We thought it was better when served hot. Because of its solid taste, it goes well with rich and oily food. Pork Korean BBQ tasted good with it.

This is the first sake that truly stood out to me as delicious. Something about the flavor runs a bit deeper than other sake I have tried, and you can’t beat the price. I’ll be ordering more in the future.

I just want to share up front that this is not our normal style of sake selection. We are trying new things to broaden our pallets. This sake was quite bitter for us when drinking alone due to the strong licorice finish. We tried this cold and at room temperature and paired it with some savory Cuban steak, chorizo and onions with sides of moros and yuca. Adding the savory flavors of the meats really muted the bitterness and allowed some more earthy notes to come through. We also enjoyed the viscosity and body of this sake on our tongues. I wouldn't say this sake is great for sipping but we enjoyed it throughout our dinner. We have some left and will be trying it warmed with some Lamb Rogan Josh. Overall it's a great sake, the licorice notes just aren't for us. Kampai!
