Michinoku Onikoroshi “Honjozo” Reviews

4.4 Rating 38 Reviews
This was my first time to try the Onikoroshi "Honjozo" -I tend to get stuck on one or two of my favorites and I'm so happy that I selected this lovely bottle of delicious. I'm far from being an experienced sake sipper, but I know what I like, which is a light, dry or semi-dry that I can drink before, with or after dinner. I have yet to be disappointed with any of my Tippsy choices and the Onikoroshi will be on my list again and again.

Nice smooth sake for a very affordable price. I preferred it chilled. Went well with food. Great label too

One of my all-time favorite bottles of sake. It is incredibly good cold or hot. It is dry but has a lightness to it that keeps it from being sharp. Very good price! Whenever we have guests who want to try sake, this is the one I offer up and they are all delighted by how delicious it is. This bottle has converted a few of my friends and family into sake drinkers!

Relative to the price point, this is a 5. Compared to sake of a similar profile but a higher price point, I found it somewhat one dimensional. The dryness is bracing and this is one I definitely want to pair with food. I drank it both cold and warm, and I have consistently found that heating dry sake brings out more layers of flavor and sweetness. It is versatile and affordable, and not a bad place to start on a sake journey.

It is medium-dry despite its SMB being +10. Both my wife and I found it better when it was cold than made warm.

Let me start by saying I'm very NEW AT THIS, so I'm just getting started. But I will say that I kept this one until last, because the video on serving and pairing suggested heating it in a warm water bath, and that seemed like a bit of trouble, so I put it off. Also, it was described as very very dry, so I thought it might be bitter, and felt skeptical. So I only started drinking it after I had emptied all the other bottles. But--I like it! I drank it with spaghetti, of all things, and it forgave me for EVEN THAT.

Delicious. The stone/mineral note is very good when it's cold while the star anise note adds a delicious perfume sweetness to it. It's a bit strong on its own and should definitely be paired with food.
