“this is my first somewhat negative review. I feel stupid not thinking this sake is wonderful. the label tells me how much I should like it, how special it is, etc., but I just didn't have an initial good impression, and that only slightly ameliorated over the next few days. So this review is not to say this isn't wonderful sake, but only that individual tastes differ, and not everyone may agree here. My wife liked it just fine.”
Thank you for your honest review. This sake does have a lemon rind type of "shibumi" which is balanced with the silky creamy texture, and it's also not a sweet nigori. Every batch is different because every crop of rice is different also, so the experience is different each time when it comes to carefully hand crafted sake.
That said, as you point out every opinion and impression/taste buds are also different, and that is why we thank you for sharing you experience! Thank you for giving it a try, we hope you find others that you are delighted with.
“I am conflicted in my review for this bottle as I was really wanting this to be the nigori I would compare all others against. It had an enjoyable heartiness, with a complex depth, and a smooth finish. Though, I was expecting it to be sweeter and this definitely leaned more dry. I was also thinking it would be lighter and more delicate, but this had a rich and strong presence. On its own, it is fine, and while I can taste its qualities and had no real complaints, it did not take me to the clouds as I had hoped. Honestly, I think this sake may be better suited to enjoy with food over drinking it on its own. While I did not have any to try it with, I could see this complimenting a dish of curry and rice. If you give this one a try, plan to enjoy it with a good meal.”
Thank you for a great review! Yes, definitely try it with some food - one of the most food friendly nigori we've tried. The maker is very careful to be authentic and natural, to utilize that year's rice to the max, so every batch you get may be slightly different.
“Didn't like this one. This was my first nigori so I was very excited to try it. Tastes/smells like rubbing alcohol. Not at all what I was hoping for.”
We are glad you ventured out to try this nigori, and are sad you didn't like it. With 15-16% alcohol, some sake do have alcoholic smell, and this is a dry one with not as much sweetness to mask it. We may suggest you try some of our best sellers like the thicker, rich, Kurosawa "Nigori" or the premium Dassai 45 "Nigori".
