I'm tall (about 6'5"), so short digging tools aren't comfortable to use for very long: stooping while lifting something end-weighted is a nice and easy shortcut to a bad back. So, I got a Fiskars Ergonomic spade a while ago simply because it was long, and it turned out the cranked blade-angle was really welcome - definitely makes a difference when you don't have to create that angle with extra movement of the tool itself. Digging out numerous kgs if potatoes with a standard garden fork convinced me: get the fork equivalent of your spade! And it's great. The length and the cranked head really live up to the "Ergonomic" name, but after digging amongst rock-strewn, heavily clay-rich soil after heavy rain, I'm very pleased to report a complete lack faikure
