The only preamps I owned prior to this that even came close sonically were a Krell KCT and a Manley Steelhead. But the EVO 300 is quieter. Wonderful!

The PrimaLuna EVO 300 has opened up the sound of my system that I didn't think was possible. The clarity of the instruments and the definition of the notes is amazing! I've been hearing things from my two channel music sources that I've never heard before. Even my wife has noticed the difference in the music that she listens to. It is the best investment I've made.

Very smooth and clear. Wide open sound stage. Can hear the decay easily.

Upgraded from a $2K integrated (Rotel RA 1572) to $10K separates (PassLabs XA-25 power amp, plus EAT eglo petite phono and HoloAudio May DAC L2, another $7K). The preamp into the Rotel has better imaging and sounds more natural & detailed. I like the two line outs (1 for power amp, 1 for headphone amp), and sufficient inputs. Controls are silky smooth and remote works well also at angles. I did not go for the PL 400 as the internal circuits are not fully balanced (according to Kat) and I only have one source with balanced out option. I find it strange that the empty phono stage box without electronics is mounted on the chassis. Looks ugly and I pay for something that is useless. At this price point, I would think most people who are into TTs will get a separate phono stage. The black finish on the transformers and the front plate are somewhat different, which is a bit odd. I got the Philips 5R4GYS rectifier tubes as on my other tube amp (Woo WA6SE) the WE422 rectifier tube improved sound considerably. Did not hear any difference at very beginning with PL stock vs. Philips. I may have to swap back and forth a few more times. I have not played with the signal tubes, but have a couple of Brimar's rolling around. I did not pair the PL pre with a PL power amp. The output impedence/damping factor on the PL power is very poor (DF 1-2). A resistor pair (amp out/speaker) acts as a voltage divider, and with frequency dependent variable impedence of speakers, that leads to sound coloration. Not my cup o'tea.

I was astonished by how much detail I had been missing from vinyl and CD's! Beautiful staging and warmth.
