Tartan Information
From Scottish Tartans Authority: "Gov. Tartan No. 1. This sett is based on Logan's 'Sutherland' tartan. Various thread counts appear in Wilson's pattern books of roughly the same proportions. Documents show that this was the tartan appointed for the Highland Companies in 1725 and later for the Black Watch in 1739. Slightly different count from 42nd Regiment. Sample in STA's Scarlett Collection. Sinclair/Brown Scrapbook (started in the 1930's) provides a particularly dark sample with the notes: " . . . worn by Earl of Sutherland 1719 [Portrait] and known to have been used by the clan and by the Gordons in the early 17th century."  With that in mind, it in considered a fashion tartan today and can be worn by anyone.

Sizing / Measuring
It is extremely important you follow our measuring video and order the size you need based on your measurement, not pants size. All of men's pants are labeled 2-4 inches smaller than what they actually measure. Please see our measuring video below or checkout or measuring page here.
If you measure an even size like 38 or 40, then order that exact size.  If you fall in between sizes we typically recommend ordering up in size for a loose, but comfortable fit.  However, each size has an extra set of snaps to go up one inch in waist size.  If you prefer a snug fit then you can order down if measure an odd size (example: 37 can go up to a 38 for a loose, comfortable fit or down to a 36 for  snug fit)
Custom waist sizes, lengths, or colors

Need a waist size or length not listed here?  Looking for a different tartan? Check out our special order listing here that will allow you to customize the kilt to your exact waist and length (only recommended if our in stock sizes won't work).  We also have many other colors listed there that we can custom order to your specific size.

UglyFest in San Diego, 2016. The kilt was a HUGE hit with the ladies! And, being it was summer, the lighter weight of the Black Watch utility kilt was perfect! Excellent fit, excellent look, excellent feel!

I ordered my kilt back in September knowing I was going to attempt some Highland games events and wanted to do things right. I had some questions about sizing as I'm a bigger guy, I got a personal response that same day, ordered right after and had a new kilt in a few days. It was so comfortable to wear all day and as far as the throwing went...i will be trying to order more for Highland games competitions.

Being fully decked out by UT kilts made the experience all that much more authentic and special for me and my son. It was a great family reunion around a true Scottish Caliegh.
