Hi Frederick, We are glad the product is working for you without any mess. As far as the color goes please shake the vial really well for about 30 seconds prior to each use to disperse and blend all the pigments. This should provide you with the right shade. There should be no "ashy" colors in the CHESTNUT. If this does not help we may need to look into the color as you may have received the wrong color. Thank you. Jaro
