I needed rail fasteners and did not have time to wait for shipping. I used these and the engineering is poor (must be recessed beyond flush in mortise, one way on female fastener works better than other, but are darn close so hard to decipher...). After installing them they will hold the bed together but far more slop that similar Rockler hardware which really lock into place well. Live and learn, but I have learned my lesson here and will never use Woodcraft hardware again.

At 5/8" wide they leave only 1/16" on each side of a 3/4" bed rail so you have a be very careful routing or build a jig. Secondly, the square edges mean you have to chisel after routing. I have used other brands that are 1/2" wide with rounded ends making them much easier to install with a 1/2" router bit.

These make a secure, strong joint when installed carefully and correctly. If you want something quick and easy to install, skip these and get one of the no-mortise sets. The depth of each mortise is critical - too shallow and the joint will be loose; too deep and you won't be able to completely close it. But if the mortise is made a bit too deep, that can easily be fixed with a shim underneath the male plate. As someone else noted, the countersinks aren't quite deep enough to completely fit the heads of #8 screws (thus I deducted one star). There's not enough clearance between the plates to allow the screw heads on both plates to stick above the surface. I used a 3/8" High Speed Steel countersink to make the countersink holes about 0.02" deeper on the female plate (this doesn't need to be done on the male plate). Also, as another reviewer noted, the brackets fit together a bit better when the female plate is installed in one orientation than it does when it's rotated 180 degrees, so be sure install it in the better orientation. On the bed rails, the male brackets are installed on end grain, so be sure to use long screws for strength. I used 3 inch long XT extra torque screws, which worked well.

I bought several sets of these fasteners years ago. They were high quality. Now the metal thickness has been greatly reduced such that they are the kind of product that can be purchased at any home improvement store. I took comparison pictures showing the great reduction in metal thickness from the last time I purchased these items but the review form did not seem to allow adding photos. This is a shame. Wood Craft used to sell good stuff at high prices. Now it seems they are selling cheap stuff at high prices.

I just received two sets of fasteners. They are not the same quality as the ones I had purchased several years ago. Why?
