Consistency is what I think this product provides. It's about as complicated as a pencil sharpener and it gives a very good and repeatable edge. First chisel I sharpened was an old beater I use if I'm afraid of hitting a nail or something. I think I found it somewhere. It took about 15 minutes to turn it into a decent bench chisel. One caution: if you have chisels you've sharpened by another method the initial rough sharpening may take a while as the tool regrinds to it's set angle. That won't affect the subsequent finer grades of sharpening or future resharpenings. Just that first pass on the coarse grit.

I'd been debating this purchase for almost two years. I hate sharpening tools and have gotten ok to good at sharpening with diamond stones and water stones, but I'm still not great at it. Woodcraft was having a special which included a free leather honing wheel, so I broke down and decided to buy the Worksharp 3000. Today, I spent several hours learning and using the tool. I sharpened 12 chisels (two different sets of bench chisels) and 2 plane irons. It took me about 3 hours to go through things. I would say that once I got the hang of it, it's way faster and better than I had been doing with stones. As my stones had been done by hand before, they were close to a 25 degree bevel, but enough off that it took a while to clean up the bevel to 25 degrees. Once that was done, it was a snap to finish going through the finer grits on the wheels. I would say the leather honing wheel is not worth buying, especially if you already have a leather strop. Just do it by hand and be done with it. Hey, at least I have an extra "free" glass wheel out of it. I might get the mesh backed 6000 grit wheel. All of my newly sharpened tools cut so much better than they did yesterday, so I'm giving this tool 5 stars for ease of use and overall functionality. I just don't see spending money on the honing wheel.

I've had my WS 3000 for years now. Before ordering, invest a couple hours at least to understand the basics of sharpening -- as easy as this machine makes sharpening, you will save yourself A LOT of frustration. Cull through to the legit YouTube videos made by experienced professionals that go over foundational sharpening & honing. Also, know the metal types of your tools - usually a Google search away. Not all blade materials are created equal. For example, a shoulder plane blade holds one of the sharpest blades in the shop. But, it is also probably made of a most brittle metal and will need attention more often. Another tidbit, never sharpen your chissels on a grinder (even slow speed grinder), at least your good ones. You can get away with hastening of a bevel regrind. Again, Youtube videos can explain at least the 3 most common metals. Also, consider the total cost of ownership. For me it was worth buying extra glass wheels to dedicate to certain grits used most and additional leather stropping wheels to dedicate to honing compounds - course (not to be confused with sandpaper "course'), medium and fine. The 'eraser' material is super inexpensive and lasts a while. I think I've still got a tiny bit of the one that came with the machine. There are a few accessories (not cheap) you need to properly sharpen lathe tools and wide plane blades. Well worth getting for multiple reasons. Although not super expensive, they are definitely worth getting. Mainly for easy and repeatable sharpening. Again, add it all up and compare your total cost vs the Tormek. Don't be hypnotized by the rapid in and out action shown on promo videos. Or the see-through sharpening feature. These are nice. And useful. But... it's bringing the background onto center stage. It's good for quick touch-ups on specific blades. If used all the time, it quickly wears away the tiny portion of your hard earned sandpaper. Using it exclusively touches the blade to the same small part of your sandpaper. Imagin throwing away a new full sheet of sandpaper when the folded section is worn. Get the jigs to sharpen on TOP. Go to YouTube and search "Stumpy Nubs & Sharpening". Although sponsored and biased, he has a number of great techniques and tips that will help. Last, my only complaint (-1/2 star) is how much time it takes to one, flatten the back side of chisels, plane irons, and the like; two the time it takes to grind a new bevel. Not things you do often but nevertheless an issue. This is an absolute must for a professionally sharpened blade. For these tasks, I've supplemented my sharpening station. Bottom line, this is an Awesome machine to have as part of my sharpening station. I stop short of saying it's a 'complete' sharpening solution. It will do 95% of what I need it to, which is a very strong A grade. I would recommend this to anyone who doesn't enjoy sharpening - pro or hobbyist. Let's face it, sharpening often won't get done when it needs if it's a hassle, inconvenient, interruption, or all three. (The guys at my local Woodcraft have one open on the floor that gets used frequently. That's a strong statement.)

I use this to sharpen and hone carving gouges. It is so much faster than using stones to sharpen gouges and because the machine is doing the work, I can focus on keeping the angle correct. I bought this about a month ago and it’s performed wonderfully so far. Highly recommended for anyone who needs to sharpen gouges and wants to spend their time using their tools instead of sharpening their tools.

Easy to use and gives flawless results. I thought I'd go with a jig and stones, but when I compared costs the 3000 won out. Best value and remarkable performance. My tools have never been this sharp, even out of the box.
