Its great quality pretty sharp out of the box & once honed it performs well. Just take your time setting the blade depth after honing it and apply skills and technique. Using most spokeshaves at a slight angle seems to improve the shaving performance. I'm comparing it to a literally unbranded import with a curved base that has a poor quality softer blade that cannot be replaced once it is worn out.

Its a good spokeshave for the money. I will hone it and learn the technique for its design. I do prefer the performance my W R bevel up spokeshave more.

I was getting tons of chatter and getting really frustrated... but once I took a file to the edges of the base to make them a bit smoother, it worked like a dream. Don't be afraid, just round over the edges a tiny bit with a file and this works great!

Wonderful, well built tool. However, the iron (blade) is relatively sharp and contained in a small plastic bag. During shipping (apparently) the blade had cut through the plastic bag and was rattling around in the box. It has a chip in the edge that will require grinding to remove. Maybe Woodcraft will sell me a grinder.. 🙂

Blade was dinged and dull. Not a problem though. I'm pretty skilled at sharpening and made quick work of getting it razor sharp, but it's impossible to get fine shavings without chatter with this spokeshave. I own other spokeshaves without this issue. Not a fan at all.
