If you are that guy who goes overboard with EVERYTHING you do, this is the machete for you. It's a SOLID blade, it's not one of those flimsy things you find at Home Depot. I certainly wouldn't suggest using it around the property for gardening or brush control. It's far too heavy for that (safely). But if you want something you can whip out at the next barbecue party and impress your friends.... it the best "check this baby out" Machete you'll ever find. It will make Rambo reach for the viagra.

This is a nice looking machete and was fun to make. I used Purpleheart for the handles, sanded to 180 grit, and finished it with wipe-on salad bowl finish. I just used it for the 1st time, and unfortunately there are a number of problems. While sharp, the blade has clearly not been hardened properly. The edge bent the first time I hit a large branch with it and had to wrench it out of the cut it made. As a result, I think that a hollow grind for a machete is probably not a great idea, because it leaves the edge too thin for the hard use that a machete can expect. Also, the sawback, while sharp and initially cuts easily, clogs up, and when I got about a half inch in on a 2" branch, pretty much stopped cutting. I got a regular crosscut saw and finished the cut in about 30 seconds. Lastly, the 1st time I swung it hard, the machete came completely out of my hand and I was (luckily) left only holding the cord I'd put in the handle. To continue using it, I put the cord around my wrist and twisted it to be tight around my wrist. If I made this again, I'd put a bigger swell in the end of the handle, I wouldn't put finish on it, and I'd probably stop sanding at 120 grit. I might even put crosshatches or some other texture on the handle.

The quality of this blank is A1! The weight, finish and sharpness are as good as blanks triple the cost. The balance after adding a handle is perfect!

There's been studies done on machetes with saw teeth on the back. If there is no guard - a piece of handle that fits between your thumb and index finger that prevents your hand from slipping onto the blade edge - your hand can lose its grip when you're sawing a branch and slide onto that sharp edge. This almost always happens late in the day after hours in the brush, with tired slippery hands. If your hands are sweaty, they'll slide onto the sharp edge which is now pointing straight up in the air. So, put a guard on the handle that prevents your hand from slipping up the blade when it's being used as a saw and you - and everyone who picks it up - won't take a trip to the emergency room at suppertime.

Built one with Patagonian Rosewood to match the Camillus Mask that I made with Patagonian Rosewood. Light blade, feels good in the hand.

I'm carving and shaping a Cocobolo handle for this beast. I will be using this knife as a survival knife for camping/hunting. This is a knife!
