I am relatively new to turning and pen making but a long time woodworker. I was excited to try the Hart Double Twist pen because I really like the look and size. Unfortunately my experience with this kit has been frustrating. The first two were my own fault. I had some difficulty getting the profile right, which is my own problem. I also misread the instructions and reversed the body and cap, which are different lengths - also my fault but I feel the instructions could have been clearer. I finally turned a fourth pen to a much better profile without reversing the blanks. I was extremely careful to match the length of the tubes exactly as this is critical for the mechanics of this pen. I was beside myself when I assembled the pen only to discover that the cap was still too short, the parts slipped together with only light finger pressure and the threads for the transmission were shallow and poorly threaded. I really expected better quality from Woodcraft. I intend to return the remaining 3 kits.

Okay, after the first glowing review, I ordered 6 more of these kits. I turned the first one just this morning. Everything looked great until the assembly. I didn't need to use anything more than my fingers to press things together. EVERY PART fit loose, some to the point they would fall out when tipped up. Not so impressed with them this time. I still love the look of the pen, but I shouldn't need to glue the press fit parts together. It will be interesting to see if this review makes it to the website. I'd be willing to bet that it won't.

I was a little hesitant to order this kit after reading another review that mentioned things not fitting, etc. After messaging customer service, I was assured that any issues that there may have been were no longer an issue. I went ahead and ordered a couple just to try. I ordered the chrome kits and coupled them with Zircote blanks and CA finish. I love the contrast and there really weren't any issues with the parts fitting. One nib seemed a little loose, so I dabbed a little CA on it and it seems fine. I had knee surgery last week and since I can't keep every pen I turn, (I'm not planning on doing any shows either) I decided to give a pen to the Dr. that did the surgery. I took four different pens in to my wife and asked her to choose one - She chose the Hart Double Twist ! I'm online now ordering more kits. They're fatter than a slimline, but not so fat as most Cigar pens.

Echo previous review regarding the parts being too small for the tubes. I invested some time in segmenting blanks for this kit only to be disappointment by the very poor fit. An attempt to CA glue parts was unsuccessful. I had this on multiple kits of this type and will not be buying anymore of them.

I really like the design of the Hart pen but mine too had some flaws. The nib slipped in and needed to be glued. The twist mechanism same but somehow by gluing it upset the geometry and does not work.

I've made two of these pens and had problems with the cap and twist mechanism being too small for the tube. I don't have to "press" them into the tube ends, they just go in by hand pushing them in. Consequently, they don't stay. The first pen I ended up gluing the parts to the turned blank (with the tube in it). The second pen was the same, but this one I couldn't get the pen to emerge from the nib. Thankfully, I hadn't glued anything yet. I'll see if my expert at the local Woodcraft store can show me what I'm doing wrong.
