Many woods, such as mahogany and cherry, vary in color from board to board. My finishing process starts with a coat of oil on all but exotics, followed by many coats of varnish. To balance color from board to board, I often need to color the oil so that the boards end up closer to the same shade. These oil tints are great for that. But bear in mind that aniline dyes are dangerous to our health, and that one should take precautions when using them, such as a respirator when mixing the dye with oil, and nitrile gloves for all handling and application. Here's a piece done in cherry, with solid surface and aluminum accents, that I colored with oil-soluble aniline dye.
