Fujikawa Professional Oire Nomi Japanese Chisels Box Set of 10 Reviews

Fujikawa use a specially selected grade of Hitachi Shirogami White Paper Steel No. 2 to make the hagane layer that forms the back and the cutting edge. It took 10 years of experimentation to find the perfect grade, but they can now produce blades which have similar hardness and edge retention to blue, but retain the higher fracture resistance of white.
Mr Fujikawa insists on absolutely traditional methods. His smiths work in a darkened blacksmithing shop so that they can see the colour of the steel they are working, and use coke forges to minimise carbon loss as the steel is heated. Quenching is done in water as this provides the fast quench needed for highly pure steels. The soft water in Miki city is particularly well suited to the job. The blades are cooled in straw ash to retain as much carbon as possible as the steel structure changes after the quench.
After hand grinding, the blades are fitted with premium grade red oak handles and deeply hot blued hoops.
The manufacturers recommend honing a single flat bevel, following the optimal 34 degree angle that the tools are ground to when supplied.
The full set of 10 is presented in a fitted box made from lightweight kiri (paulownia) wood. Kiri is a lightweight, very stable, sustainable timber with excellent natural humidity regulating and anti-corrosive properties.
Material: Selected White Paper Steel No.2
Hardness: 62-63HRC
Handle Material: Hon Akagashi (premium Japanese Red Oak)
Overall Length: 225mm
The set of 10 includes 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 24, 30, 36 and 42mm chisels
NOTE:
All Japanese chisels are made using a socket tang construction, the bolster narrows into a tang that goes up a hole in the middle of the handle. A separate steel ferrule butts up against the bolster and constrains the wood onto the tang, forming a joint that becomes tighter with use. You might see a fine line running around the neck of the tool, this isn't a crack, it is the join between the ferrule and the bolster.

Top Quality set of chisel. Nicely balanced and comfortable in hand. They cut very well when sharpened as should. They'll last forever if looked after and kept nice and sharp. I consider these to be better value than other top end chisels.

Just brilliant, had a set stolen years ago and refused to pay the amount again, sick of using the ‘modern generic rubbish’ never again will I go without Japanese chisels!! Perfectly balanced, super light, you can feel exactly what the blade is doing!! They do not come ready! There ground perfectly at 34 degrees ready to be honed. I use the scary sharp system and honing fluid, absolutely perfect!!! Workshop heaven are just the best place for real top quality tools!!

These chisels are the top of the chisel food chain.. absolutely epic, seem expensive but when you work out that they're hand made and the level of craftsmanship that goes into them it's hard to imagine that you can actually get 10 for that price. Not for site or first fix, but the absolute best for bench and cabinetry

When i first brought these i had no idea that they did not come ready to use, however after speaking to the team I learnt that the hoop on each chisel had to be set correctly (YouTube) so that they could be used with a metal hammer, then understanding the correct bevel and how to polish the bottoms. Once all this had been done, well amazing. I love using them better than any other chisel on the market in the world. They hold their edge very well indeed even on seasoned oak. They might seem expensive at the time, but once you start working with them that thought will wonder out of the window and never return. I would not recommend using a water stone with these but micro film on a thick chunk of float glass is the best way forward that it lasts much longer with no need to flatten your stones.
