Tsunesaburo Aogami 50mm (2") Laminated Japanese Plane Iron Reviews

Experience the legendary smoothness and edge retention of Aogami (blue paper steel) in a western metal bodied handplane. This thin laminated replacement plane iron has been made and carefully heat treated for us by Tsunesaburo Hamono in Japan; they are a drop in fit and shouldn't require any modifications to the plane, no mouth filing, changing Y levers etc, just take the old one out and pop the new one in. Honing angles are the same as for carbon steel irons (25 / 30) and being laminated they are a pleasure to hone freehand, keep them clear of diamond stones though as the soft iron supporting layer can damage the diamond surface. Tsunesaburo Aogami (blue paper steel) laminated plane iron. 50mm (2") to fit No. 4 and 5 bench planes. Thickness: 2.6mm

This is the second one of these I have purchased. The back of this one was very flat and only took 10 minutes to lap and polish up. Remains sharp for longer than the original Stanley blade. Very pleased.

Nicely finished and packed in a simple cardboard holder. The back needed quite a lot of work, using the ruler method, to flatten and get all the machine marks out. The primary beve was nicely ground at 25deg so it was easy to hone a 30 deg edge bevel using a jig and final 16000 grit stone. The blade was then paired with a very well made Qhangsheng cap iron and screw and installed in an old Bailey Stanley no 5. Fitted perfectly with no adjustments needed. Once adjusted and put to the test gossamer thin shavings effortlessly flowed from pine and hard whiteoak. Edge retention remains excellent. Tearout was not an issue. I have Veritas, Lee Nielsen, Luban, Norris, Stanley , Record, Japanese, Taiwanese, German and a few vintage blades to compare it to and its right up there with the best of them. Highly recommended!!!

Purchased as a birthday present so not used myself. However the plane does not need to be filed for the blade to fit. This is unlike a similar version from another seller. This blade was recommended by one of my brother's chargehands. In addition the item arrived next day which was a bonus.
